water and is used in flour and dough. | | Preparation | Calcium Bromate may be prepared by reacting
calcium hydroxide with sodium bromate or by reacting
calcium sulfate with barium bromate:
Ca(OH)2＋ 2NaBrO3→Ca(BrO3)2＋ 2NaOH
CaSO4 (aq)＋ Ba(BrO3)2 (solid)→Ca(BrO3)2 (aq)＋ BaSO4 (solid)
Of the two methods, the latter seems to be more
stable one since the temperature can be as high as 80°C in solution. The usual product is a monohydrate,
Ca(BrO3)2·H2O.
Calcium bromate monohydrate occurs as colorless,
monoclinic crystals or prismatic plates which are soluble
in water. This salt loses its water below 180°C and
decomposes above that temperature to form calcium
bromide plus oxygen. |
