| Chemical Properties | Light yellow transparent viscous liquid | | Uses | Alkylphenols such as 4-nonylphenol (NP) and octylphenol (OP) can be generated by oxidation and subsequent hydrolysis of tris(nonylphenyl)phosphite (TNPP) used as additive in plastics. TNPP is used as a heat stabiliser in various polymeric food packaging materials such as styrenes, vinyl polymers, and rubber polyolefins. TNPP is also used to maintain the colour stability, processing stability, and performance integrity of the polymers. NP is used as a starting material in the manufacture of TNPP and so it may be present as an impurity as well as a hydrolysis product. Alkylphenols in food may also be occurred due to degradation of the most widely used non-ionic surfactants polyethoxylated nonylphenols (APEOs) which are cleaning agents in bottled manufacturing. | | Uses | TNPP in combination with irganox is used to protect polyamide 6 (PA6) from oxidative degradation during the preparation of flame retardant nanocomposites. TNPP can be used as a stabilizer that prevents the molecular weight reduction and increases the tensile strength of the composite. It can also be used as a chain extender to improve the polymeric viscosity during the melt-blending of poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate) based clay nanocomposites which find potential application as packaging materials. | | General Description | Tris(nonylphenyl) phosphite (TNPP) is an antioxidant that is majorly used as a stabilizer to improve the performance of polyethylene by decomposing the hydroperoxides.
